Renato Grieco

I'm Renato Grieco and I'm a composer and sound enthusiast born and based in Naples, south Italy.
At the moment I am working around the themes of listening, recording, archiving, narration, voice and speech.
I question the space through the production, the recording, the organization and the diffusion of sounds.
It all started playing the double bass. Going forward, my practice has shifted more and more from the act of playing to that of listening.
I tried my hand at composing music for loudspeakers -with the pseudonym kNN-.
I experimented with the placement of one or more sound sources in a habitable context. I imagined and designed objects or spaces for listening -both physical and virtual-. I have spoken inside some objects. I listened through other objects. I went back looking for old-fashioned ways of making and playing-back music.

My work has very little to do with so-called “acoustic ecology”. I believe in absolute waste and carnival. I consider listening as a cognitive activity itself, which influences the intellect and the body with its own semantics, its humor and its tragic nature.

Since 2012 I have had the privilege of presenting my work all over the world, both with my solo project (under the pseudonym kNN) and in numerous collaborations as composer, performer, interpreter, sound designer or sound-dramaturg.
I was co-curator of the festival La Digestion - musica ascoltata raramente.
I work as a freelance location recordist and as a sound engineer at KU studio (Napoli).
Since 2020 I am a professor of History and Criticism of Electroacoustic Technologies at the Conservatory of Benevento.
